“Patience is a virtue, Genevieve,” the mater would intone, pulling the fun books out of my hands so I would do the boring books, which is how the Greeks and Romans and I first got acquainted.
She used to hide my library books so I would do homework. It felt like cruel and unusual punishment.
My childhood was spent mostly swallowing pages…I’ve probably read thousands.
