Fashion, Minimalism, New Year’s Resolution
There’s a difference between being stylish and being fashionable.
Fashion is all about the trends, yo.
Recently, fast fashion has become a curse word in America. Because: the environment! You should buy secondhand!
LOL, I’ve been buying secondhand my whole life because we had no money because God.
And also because I think there might have been an argument with my mom in middle school involving me wanting to be more fashionable and her being exasperated and saying that if I didn’t like the clothes she picked out, I could pay for them myself!
And so I did, and so I do.
Anyway, having style really is about being unique. What do you like, not, what’s trendy at Nordstroms?
I really like being stylish because it’s also about flattering your own unique body and skin tone, whoever you are and however you look.
What’s trendy at Nordstroms typically doesn’t look great on me. The colors, and the silhouettes, and the…well, it’s like the designers try to please everyone all of the time, and you just can’t do that. Women used to sew their own clothes by hand and so they fit better.
I learned soooooooooooooo much about style from my mom. Are you a “winter”, “summer”, “fall”, or “spring”? There’s a whole book on this somewhere. I don’t remember the title or author.
Also, color theory. Match complimentary colors with other complimentary colors. It’s the color wheel — didn’t we all learn this in third grade?
Wear dark colors in winter, lighter colors in summer. Is this still a thing people do?
If you have red hair, wear greens. If you have blue eyes, wear blues. Don’t wear black or white, Genevieve, that washes you out or makes you look sallow. Ok, but Mom, all the fun patterns are in black and white and black is my base color!
Oh, did I mention the capsule wardrobe? Yesssssss, the minimalist’s dream! Google it. I chose black as my base color because there’s like only one brown (chocolate) that looks good on me, so I tend to wear shades of blue, grey, and black. White is my base color for summer. I never wear a yellow top, it just looks too weird with blonde hair.
You also have to know your own body type, I think there’s an entire book on this as well. Hourglass or pear-shaped or top-heavy or bottom-heavy… You might need an empire waist or a belt to accentuate things… Ok, there’s so much theory to be explored here, I can’t even begin to describe it all.
Six months ago, I was so insecure, I couldn’t stop buying, buying, buying. Now, the irony is, none of it fits because I lost so much weight from the stress!
That’s God’s joke on me. I’m resolved to not buy anything for the next year. Learn contentment, Genevieve. And to stop worrying so much about what others think of you. Pray more. Worry less.
Hmmmmmm, it became a New Year’s resolution.
